WHAT IS MEASLES?
Measles is a highly contagious viral infection that spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person talks, sings, coughs, sneezes, etc. Due to a recent outbreak in various Texas counties, we want to ensure our patients and families have the information they need to stay safe.
SYMPTOMS OF MEASLES
Early Symptoms (7-21 days after exposure)
- High fever (up to 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis)
- Fatigue and irritability
Later Symptoms (9-14 Days after exposure)
- Small white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
- A red, blotchy rash that starts at the face and then spreads down the body
IS MEASLES CONTAGIOUS?
Measles is EXTREMELY CONTAGIOUS from 7 days before the rash appears until 4 days after it begins to fade.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE MEASLES?
If you suspect you or your child has measles, DO NOT come to Pediatric People. Call your county’s health department. Again, Measles spreads easily in healthcare settings, and we must take precautions to protect our patients and staff.
Follow These Steps:
- Stay home and isolate to avoid spreading the virus.
- Call Pediatric People at 214-396-5200 or your county’s health department for guidance BEFORE seeking in-person care.
- Monitor symptoms and drink plenty of fluids.
- Avoid contact with infants, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system.
- If symptoms worsen (difficulty breathing, persistent fever, confusion, or dehydration), seek urgent medical attention immediately at your closest children’s hospital emergency room. Unless arriving by ambulance, CALL them and let them know you are coming.
PREVENTION & VACCINATION
The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective at preventing measles.
Children should receive a minimum of two doses:
- First dose at 12-15 months old
- Second dose at 4-6 years old (can be given early if desired at minimum 30 days from first dose after 12months of age)
- During an outbreak a dose can be given as early as 6 months but the child will still need to have two additional doses after 12 months of age.
If you or your child are unvaccinated, schedule a vaccination visit with your Primary Care Physician as soon as possible.
QUICK ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
Do I need a test for measles?
Testing is recommended only if symptoms match and there has been known exposure. Text or secure message us for advice.
Can I still get measles if I’ve had the vaccine?
The MMR vaccine is 97% effective after 12months of age with two doses. If you’re fully vaccinated, the risk is very low.
What if I’ve been exposed but don’t have symptoms?
If your child has been exposed and is vaccinated, your risk is low. If your child has been exposed and is unvaccinated, call us immediately.
When can my child return to daycare or school?
A child with measles should stay home at least 4 days after the rash appears and until cleared by a doctor.
What is the MMR vaccine availability?
We offer the MMR vaccine only to our well-care patients. At this time, we cannot provide it to family members of our patients.
- If you’re a well-care patient, schedule a vaccine visit online.
- If you only visit us for urgent care, please contact your PCP for the MMR vaccine.
What are the MMR vaccine guidelines?
- The first dose can be given as early as 6 months of age.
- The second dose (booster) can be given 30 days after the first dose, as long as your child is 1 year or older.
