    Piercing day

    Sterile studs go in with one trigger pull.

    2–3 weeks

    Wait this long to swim if you can, and keep heads above water.

    6 weeks

    The earliest you can switch. Keep the piercing earrings in until then, unless there are signs of infection.

    6–8 weeks

    Swap straight to a new nickel-free pair. Never leave the holes empty; they can shrink or close quickly.

Questions parents ask

Can I bring my own earrings?

No, sterile, one-use cartridges from our inventory must be used.

Are previous medical records required?

No, medical records are not required.

Are there age restrictions?

This service is available to patients beginning at 2 months of age. Parent or legal guardian consent required.

Where do we pierce?

We only pierce ear lobes, but NOT ear cartilage (the upper part of the ear), noses, or belly buttons.

Can the earrings come out before 6 weeks — temporarily, for sports, or for any other reason?

Please keep them in for 6 weeks, including for sports and other activities. The one exception is infection: if the earlobe becomes red, swollen or painful, or develops a rash, remove the earring, gently clean the area and call us. If an earring comes out on its own, please don't try to put it back in yourself; call us right away.

When should the earrings be removed?

Keep the first earrings in for at least 6 weeks, then switch between 6 and 8 weeks, putting the new pair in right away. Keep wearing earrings continuously for the first year, because the holes can shrink or close quickly. The one exception before 6 weeks is infection: if the earlobe becomes red, swollen or painful, or develops a rash, remove the earring, gently clean the area and call us.

How do I choose permanent earrings?

Between 6 and 8 weeks, switch to nickel-free earrings such as titanium, medical plastic or yellow gold, and keep wearing nickel-free earrings for the first year, when the risk of developing a nickel allergy is highest. Avoid white gold and costume jewelry, which can contain nickel.

When is swimming okay?

Please avoid swimming for as long as possible, ideally 2 to 3 weeks. If you do swim, keep your child's head above water and gently wash the piercing with soap and water afterward.
