Nasal Congestion: Product Recommendations
A practical guide to the over-the-counter products we recommend for managing nasal congestion and related symptoms.
Use these recommendations together as a daily routine. Saline rinses are the foundation; medications can be layered in based on your child's symptoms. As always, follow age-appropriate dosing on each product's label and reach out to our office with any questions.
Daily Nasal Care
Saline nasal rinse
5 squirts in each nostril, then blow the nose well to thin and remove nasal secretions. Use 3 to 4 times a day, daily.
Simply Saline (Daily Care)Bedtime nasal spray
1 squirt in each nostril at bedtime, after using the saline rinse and blowing the nose well.
Flonase Sensimist Allergy ReliefAllergy Medications
Morning antihistamine
May give Claritin or Zyrtec in the morning to help with allergy-related congestion throughout the day.
Children's Zyrtec Children's ClaritinBedtime antihistamine
Give Benadryl by mouth at bedtime for nasal congestion and stuffiness.

Offer fluids often, including Pedialyte ice pops, to maintain hydration, reduce fever, and soothe sore throats.

Call our office right away if your child:
- Is having difficulty breathing or breathing very fast
- Has a high or persistent fever, or a fever lasting more than 3 days
- Is unable to keep fluids down or shows signs of dehydration
- Has facial pain, ear pain, or thick discolored discharge that isn't improving
- Has symptoms that are worsening or not improving after 7 to 10 days
